Discovering Hidden Beauty at the National Arboretum

Tucked right on the edge of Washington, D.C., the National Arboretum is one of the city’s hidden treasures — peaceful, educational, and full of surprises. Our recent field trip reminded us that learning doesn’t always happen in a classroom; sometimes, it blooms right in nature.

One of our favorite stops was the National Bonsai & Penjing Museum. Students were fascinated to learn that bonsai is not just a “tiny tree,” but an ancient art form from Asia that requires patience, care, and imagination. We compared how Asian art often focuses on balance and harmony in nature, while American art can express boldness and individuality — a wonderful lesson in cultural appreciation.

The Herb Garden was bursting with colors and scents — especially the many varieties of peppers, which quickly became a highlight of the day! We talked about how herbs and spices grow, and students practiced identifying the different parts of plants — roots, stems, leaves, flowers, and fruit.

And perhaps the most special discovery: an Ebony tree! Many people don’t realize ebony comes from a real tree — known for its deep, rich wood often used in instruments and art. It was a powerful reminder that beauty and strength can come from nature in unexpected ways.

Teachers and families who want to extend the learning can explore the Arboretum’s free lesson plans — perfect for hands-on science, art, and cultural projects.

Every visit to the Arboretum helps our learners connect what they see, smell, and touch with what they know — blending science, culture, and wonder in one peaceful corner of the city.
